Around 50 vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.

Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a official communication.

Law enforcement say they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a individual noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.

The liquid had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.

Officers then found multiple other marked automobiles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.

Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation outlawing the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.

Officials say initial examinations show the fluid was likely blood from a person.

"There is still no clue as to its source; officials are not yet informed of any harm in connection with the incident," they commented.

City officials said they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the residents for information.

An important official said the vandalism made him stunned and needed to be solved quickly.

"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing violent incident in 2020," he wrote on a platform, mentioning the killing of nine people by a gunman focusing on individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
