The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a dare for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. On the surface, it may seem like typical biological terror, but inside Together exists a profound examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for a decade. Married in reality in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie move from the big city to the countryside for professional reasons. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of completely losing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that arise in most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Conversely, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can embark on right now.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
