A minimum of thirteen people perish and 98 injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The president reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose term finished the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The development of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its role in national projects. They were executed at an rapid speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party called for an immediate suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This pause was proposed pending a thorough technical review. The party stated that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
